To calculate a tip, multiply the bill by the tip percentage divided by 100. For a 20% tip on $50, that is $50 × 0.20 = $10, making the total $60.
Quick mental shortcuts
- 10% — move the decimal one place left: $50 → $5
- 20% — find 10% and double it: $5 → $10
- 15% — 10% plus half of that 10%: $5 + $2.50 = $7.50
Splitting the bill
Add the tip to the bill first, then divide by the number of people. A $60 total (with tip) split three ways is $20 each. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is common and perfectly fine.
Tipping customs vary
