A percentage is simply a fraction out of one hundred. Most everyday percentage problems reduce to one of three questions, all covered by this tool.
1. Part Of A Whole
‘X% of Y’ multiplies Y by X/100 — 15% of 200 is 0.15 × 200 = 30. This is the most common discount and tax calculation.
2. Finding The Rate
‘X is what % of Y’ divides X by Y and multiplies by 100. It answers questions like scores, completion rates and market share.
3. Percentage Change
Change compares an old and new value: (new − old) ÷ |old| × 100. Positive means growth, negative means a drop.
