How to Convert Litres to Gallons (US & UK)

One US gallon is about 3.79 litres; a UK gallon is 4.55. Learn the formulas, a quick table, and why US and imperial gallons differ.

To convert litres to US gallons, divide by 3.785. For example, 20 L ÷ 3.785 = 5.28 US gallons. For UK (imperial) gallons, divide by 4.546 instead.

The formulas

  • US gallons = litres ÷ 3.78541
  • UK gallons = litres ÷ 4.54609
  • litres = gallons × the same number

Quick reference (US)

  • 1 L ≈ 0.26 gal
  • 5 L ≈ 1.32 gal
  • 10 L ≈ 2.64 gal
  • 20 L ≈ 5.28 gal
  • 50 L ≈ 13.21 gal

US vs UK gallons

They are not the same: a US gallon is 3.785 L and a UK imperial gallon is 4.546 L — about 20% larger. Fuel economy and recipe volumes can be badly off if you use the wrong one, so always check which gallon a figure means.
