Open Graph & Meta Tags: Control How Links Look

Meta tags and Open Graph tags tell search engines and social platforms how to title, describe and preview your page. Learn the essential ones to set.

Meta tags describe your page to search engines, and Open Graph tags control how it looks when shared on social media — the title, description and preview image. Setting them well improves both search results and share cards.

The essential meta tags

  • title — the clickable headline in search results (~60 characters)
  • description — the summary beneath it (~150–160 characters)
  • viewport — makes the page mobile-friendly

The key Open Graph tags

  • og:title — the headline on the share card
  • og:description — the summary text
  • og:image — the preview image (1200×630 works well)
  • og:url — the canonical link
  • og:type — usually "website" or "article"

Twitter/X cards

Add twitter:card (e.g. "summary_large_image") so X shows a rich preview too. Most platforms fall back to Open Graph if Twitter tags are missing.
